Introduction:
Opened in 1846, Royal Albert Dock is one of Liverpool’s most iconic and historic buildings. Thanks to continuous investment in the area, this world-famous building is home to The Beatles Museum, the Tate Liverpool, apartments, hotels, restaurants, shops and tourist attractions.
As PMC is a Fire Stopping accredited contractor, Royal Albert Dock’s Facilities Manager asked us to inspect and repair all JLL managed areas of the Dock, particularly the Grade I listed Atlantic and Britannia Pavilions, to make it fire safe.
The Challenge
Our investigation showed that various areas of the Royal Albert Dock site needed fire prevention works to ensure it was up to date with current fire regulations. We presented JLL and the Facilities Manager with our recommendations and they gave us the go ahead to get started.
How PMC helped Keep this Grade I listed building fire safe
As this is a protected historic site, we were careful to respect the existing materials and structure of the building while we were carrying out this essential fire safety maintenance.
We carried out a range of Fire Stopping works including removing existing out of date fire foam from cast iron pipes, electrical ducts and conduits, service holes, and cabling in the Albert Dock cellar, and replacing it with the appropriate fire batting materials. Fire Stopping works are highly effective because they fill and seal openings and joints to stop fire from spreading.
When these original works were complete, we spotted further fire prevention works that needed attention to meet government fire regulations. These were recorded and submitted to the client along with costs. JLL asked us to complete the further work to ensure the building is fully fire compliant and up to date.
Results:
- Royal Albert Dock and its restaurants, hotels, and tourist attractions are now fire safe.
- Appropriate fire batting materials replaced throughout.
- We’re working with JLL to make sure Royal Albert Dock stays up to date with fire regulations.
Our team ensured everything highlighted in the investigation was replaced with new Fire Stopping materials. The Royal Albert Dock and all its businesses and attractions are now fire safe and up to date on all regulations, so it’s safe for the public, visitors and staff.
We’re working closely with JLL and the Royal Albert Dock to carry out regular fire safety inspections and repairs so this historic area of the city stays safe for everyone.
