Overview:

Solar energy is set to become the world’s largest energy source by 2050, overtaking fossil fuels, wind, and hydro. Businesses, commercial enterprises, and other large buildings have embraced solar powered energy in an effort to operate sustainably, dramatically reduce their energy costs and consumption, and look ahead to the future of energy in the UK and internationally. In 2019, Rossall Independent Boarding School in Fleetwood, Lancashire became one of them.

The Challenge – keeping services going at a busy hospital

Sports education powered by solar energy

Founded in 1844, Rossall Independent Boarding School is surrounded by a 160-acre campus and the stunning Lancashire coastline. This leading co-educational day and boarding school has an Elite Sports programme and opened a brand-new sports centre in September 2019. The campus sports centre accommodates indoor hockey, basketball, and cricket, as well as a four-lane 50m sprint track, a viewing gallery for spectators, and an outdoor Astroturf. The sports centre will also be opened to the wider community.

124 solar panels installed for free renewable energy

PMC partnered with CJB Energy Services to install 124 325kw solar panels on the roof of the campus sports centre, allowing the facility to generate free renewable energy. PMC worked closely with CJB Energy and other relevant building contractors to install the panels to tight timescales while minimising disruption to the school environment.

Results:

The installation was completed in April 2019, a few months before the official opening of the Rossall Independent Boarding School sports centre, and is calculated to make some impressive savings for the school.

  • The sports centre will produce 28,509 kWh of free electricity each year, enough to power 9 homes.
  • The solar PV system is projected to pay back costs within approximately 6 years.
  • The sports centre will save £2000 in electricity costs on average every year.
